Welcome to Stephen F. Austin Elementary School. I encourage you to tour our website and learn a bit about our school. We have about 700 Kindergarten and First Grade students, and an eager, highly motivated staff of more than 70 teachers, instructional assistants, office staff and administrators.
Our students participate in physical education, music art, and computer classes along with the core subject areas of language arts (reading, language, and spelling), math, science, and social studies. We utilize the Accelerated Reader program, and small group instruction for reading. We also supplement our instruction with our Waterford Reading Lab, and the Academic Lab. We have Bilingual, Life Skills, Speech and other special services for those that qualify.
At Stephen F. Austin, good attendance and good behavior is encouraged and rewarded. We believe in reinforcing good work, good behavior, and perfect attendance throughout the year. Our PTO helps us with these reward programs. Our PTO is quite active, and they sponsor our volunteer program. We value our volunteers and encourage all of our families to volunteer at school, or at home with materials preparation.
The safety of our students is of the utmost importance to us. Therefore, all visitors to our campus must report first and last to the desk of the Receptionist to check in and out of school. There you will present a valid Driver's License or acceptable I.D. which will be scanned using the V-Soft program. This will take place every time you enter the building.
I know that the success of your child depends on the quality of our school and home relationship. Therefore, I hope to see each and every parent and guardian on our campus this year, and highly encourage parents and guardians to talk to your child's teacher on a regular basis by note, email, phone, or in person.
Sincerely,
Principal Mary Mears Burke
