The course of study for English I encompasses a detailed study of the basics of formal grammar, composition, spelling, vocabulary, paragraph development, and literature. The teaching of literature includes the short story, the novel, the drama, and poetry. A major emphases is placed on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Attention is also given to mythology and the reading of the epic entitled Ulysses. Reading also includes at least six book reports, some being outside reading and other being in class studies. |
English II incorporates the study of literature, grammar vocabulary, and composition into a program designed to improve the student's ability to read, write, speak, think, and listen. Particular attention is paid to achieving TAKS-related objectives in both writing and reading. The literature study is a general one, including the short story, the novel, drama, and poetry. Readings will include one Shakespearean play and To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Outside reading and book reports are also an integral part of the course. Writing instruction will focus on the persuasive, informative , narrative, and descriptive modes. Grammar study is incorporated and related to the writing and revising of compositions. Vocabulary Study is structured to coordinate with SAT vocabulary. |
English III which is set up primarily as an American literature course also includes an extensive use of various types of composition. The principles of grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, usage, sentence structure and sentence variety are incorporated into the study and practice of the composition process. Students are also encourages to improve their speaking and writing vocabulary list and extensive reading. Readings will include The Scarlet Letter and other American novels and dramas. The second semester will be spent win researching an American author and his works. Instruction will be given on the use of the library and the structure of a research paper using MLA standards. |
English IV is a combined course in British Literature and advanced composition. The prerequisite for this course is the completion of the first three years of English required by Dayton High School. The materials covered are basic selections of British Literature which are presented and discussed around the unifying themes of GOOD vs. EVIL, human foibles, and the role of women in society through prose, poetry, and drama. Integration with other subject areas will provide the student opportunities to work on materials presented in other disciplines while exploring the themes. |

English I and II Honors/Pre-Advanced Placement classes give students the opportunity to practice (at appropriate level) skills that will enable them to be successful in Advanced Placement classes on the eleventh and twelfth grade levels. Pre- Advanced students should be task oriented, proficient readers who are able to set priorities with regard to time and responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on rhetorical strategies and literary analysis. Great Expectations, To Kill a Mockingbird, Romeo and Juliet, and The Great Gatsby are a few of the pieces studied. Any student who is willing to make the necessary sacrifices and commit to the time and work necessary to meet the requirements of the class is welcome to enroll. |

ESL (English as a Second Language) is a course for students who speak a language other then English at home. The ESL class develops the ability of these students to use English in all areas, including listening, speaking, reading, and writhing, the purpose of the ESL class is to help students participate more effectively in their other classes. ESL I will focus on acquiring the basic skills needed to speak, understand and write English. |
ESL II will improve on the skills acquired in ESL I while putting special emphasis on writhing skill needed to succeed on the TAKS test. This course will also prepare the students to be in a regular English course. They will gain some knowledge of literature and research skills as well. |

SAT/ACT Prep Course is a semester elective that teaches test taking strategies and provides substantial practice for the national college entrance examinations This course is most valuable for students in the spring of their sophomore year or fall of their junior year before they take the college boards. |
