850,000 Texas Children Eligible for and not Enrolled
in Medicaid and CHIP
by Greg Gibson
According to the Texas Health and Human Service Commission, of the
1.5 million Texas children who do not have health insurance, more
than 850,000 are eligible for the State Children's Health Insurance
Program (SCHIP) or Medicaid but are not enrolled. Of the eligible
children who are not enrolled, state officials say, 75 percent qualify
for Medicaid, which is a free program. The rest qualify for SCHIP,
which is designed for families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid
but cannot afford private insurance. SCHIP costs $50 or less per year.
Both provide checkups, immunizations, prescription drugs, hospital
visits and dental care. A Texas family of four can earn up to $41,300
and still qualify for CHIP. The same family could earn up to $20,650
and qualify for Children's Medicaid. For more information call (877)
543-7669, or go to chipmedicaid.com.
