Letter from Superintendent, Spring 2016

May, 2016

As we enter the month of May, it’s hard to believe that the 2015-16 school year is almost over. The celebration of graduation and the beginning of a new chapter is just weeks away for our soon to be graduates. Summer is around the corner for all of our students. It’s been a great year with many accomplishments as our students have seen both academic and extracurricular success thus far. We have also continued to address the many challenges that come with being a growing school district, including making progress on our bond/construction projects, as well as completing the elementary zones for next school year.

We still have important work to do in these final weeks with the administration of the STAAR/EOC tests and the last few weeks of school. The district strives to improve the process of measuring how our students are doing. While the state measures us on our passing scores, what we want to observe as a district is continued progress year after year. The progress we make in student growth informs us as to what teaching strategies are working, as well as where we need to make adjustments so we can improve. Achieving significant progress each year is the most important goal we have for our students.

Dayton ISD always wants to be ready for state assessments, but more importantly we want to maintain a perspective that goes beyond any one test.  Instead, we look at preparing each child for life beyond our schools to be college and/or career ready for today’s world.  To that end, we believe that it is important that we partner with our parents and community to build within our students the skills and character traits that lead to future success.

With that in mind, please help us de-emphasize the perceived “high-stakes” nature of the test and simply instill to your child confidence and encouragement to do his/her best on the state assessments.  Please know that we will do our part to continually improve upon our work for the benefit of all students.

Let’s finish the year out strong all the way until the last school bell of 2015-16 rings. Thank you for allowing us to teach your children this year.
